Literary Award: Words of Salt

NEW YORK/AREZZO. Too Much to Bear, by Christine Recchia, and Matthew 5:13, by Vincenzo Caci, are the winning short stories in the first edition of the literary prize Words of Salt (Parole di Sale). The contest was organized by The Salt Queen Foundation, a cultural institution founded in New York by the Milanese artist Bettina Werner, in collaboration with The Tuscan Association of New York, The Arezzo Wave Italy Foundation, and The Arturo Bandini Writing School.

“It was thrilling to receive stories inspired by salt, the basic element of my works. This year I celebrate the twentieth anniversary of my career and Words of Salt was an opportunity to link my art with literature. It was a surprise to receive so many submissions to this first edition—a sea of creativity, especially that expressed by women writers.”

Bettina Werner

Two juries selected from the 173 stories submitted—short stories inspired by salt in all its vastness, from mythology to cooking, travels to history, philosophy to medicine—divided in two sections: Italian and English.

Vincenzo Caci with Matthew 5:13, a story inspired by Tomasi di Lampedusa’s Gattopardo, won the biggest prize of the Italian section: a trip to New York donated by The Tuscan Association of New York and the collector’s edition book, Salt Sculpture Book, created by Bettina Werner in 1995. There were three winners in the English section. Philadelphia writer Christine Recchia leads with Too Much to Bear, a story whose themes are solitude, love, desire, and the sea. She wins a salt painting by Bettina Werner inspired by the story itself. The second prize was awarded to the imaginative story, The Love of Salt, by New York writer Natascha Hildebrandt. The special prize was won by the Italian-American Maria Miscella, for How Salt Saved a Family from Hunger, in which she describes in simple but very realistic language how her family survived poverty during the Second World War.

Founded in 2002 in New York, The Salt Queen Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit Foundation whose goals include the celebration of artists whose free imagination is uniquely expressed through the use of innovative techniques and unusual materials.
